Trill-TOC v2.2 (Win32/Plugin)

Note: This is an "addon" application and not approved or associated with Cerulean Studios or AOL.

What is Trill-TOC?

It's an IRC server, an AIM TOC client and a bit of magic... ;)

Huh? Say that in English please...

Effectively, it allows Trillian to connect to AIM using the TOC protocol.
As far as Trillian is concerned it's talking to an IRC server, so you can add your buddies to your contact list and continue to use Trillian almost normally.

There are a few restrictions. It doesn't support locally saved buddies, it only uses server side buddies and it currently doesn't modify them*. Nor does it support file transfers** or AIM chatrooms*, but it will allow you talk to your AIM buddies when the OSCAR protocol will not work.

Installation (plugin)

Just grab the trilltoc.dll and place it in the plugins directory under Trillian.

You may wish to virus scan it and/or verify it with the provided checksums if so inclined.

(Grab a windows version of md5sum here orhere.)

FilenameSizeChecksum
trilltoc.dll (plugin) 182,272 md5sum: b877726ad40b29954def654ba57e8430

Then go to the preferences page and load it.

Installation (standalone)

Installation is fairly simple:

Just grab the self-installing exe and run it...

...or download the provided zip file.

Extract the single exe file and virus scan it and/or verify it with the provided checksums if so inclined.

(Grab a windows version of md5sum here orhere.)

FilenameSizeChecksum
trill-toc-rel-installer.exe (self installer) 185,750 md5sum: 2b0e7a06228ccb61e7ac75a9695f2bf8
trill-toc.exe (unzipped) 153,088 md5sum: d74e099347e33f6945f507d1f198fe92
trill-toc.exe (in zipfile)  148,341 packed crc32: 2b7d2049

Toss it into your Trillian directory (or anywhere really).

Create a shortcut to your liking and your done.

Note: Trill-TOC in zip format currently dosen't modify any registry entries or create files so just delete the file if you want to remove it. If you used the self installer please remove it using add/remove programs under control panel;or the uninstall link in the start menu.

Usage

Launch your newly created shortcut, and a dialog box should appear telling you to create a connection to an IRC server running on 127.0.0.1 port 6667. Click on that box and add a new IRC connection under Trillian.

Once you connect you will automatically join a "channel" called #CONTACT_LIST. This is where your buddies will "join" and "part" as the log on and off of AIM.

Follow the onscreen instructions and log in. Once connected you may add your buddies to your Trillian contact list and talk to those buddies like you normally would.

Additional Notes

The IRC server will accept connections ONLY from localhost. This is for security reasons. Also, be aware that your username and password to AIM will be added to the logs if Trillians logging is enabled.

If the Trillian client disconnects from the IRC server, the server will buffer and timestamp all output normally sent to the client until it reconnects. This is handy in case Trillian crashes or you manage to lose the #CONTACT_LIST "channel" window. (Try not to close it, you may lose it. If you do, just hit reconnect on the connection entry in the tasks list and it'll be recreated). This ensures no missed messages. =)

You may connect to the server using your ICQ number and use this as an ICQ connection instead of an AIM connection.

### In other words: Closing Trillian does NOT disconnect you from AIM when connected via Trill-TOC. Think of it as a small AIM proxy that maintains the connection so you must disable or close it down to disconnect from AIM. ...It also eats up memory as it buffers so be forewarned. =)

The application will only accept one connection per running copy. To run multiple accounts you need to run multiple copies of Trill-TOC. To accomodate this Trill-TOC accepts the local port to listen on as it's sole command line parameter.

Large responses from bots/services will be split into multiple lines;the Trillian channel window dosen't appear to parse html formatted messages so the html is stripped and break tags are converted to cr/lfs, so you may wish to adjust flood settings accordingly.

Try to keep pastes to the window small;otherwise you may flood yourself off. There is a simple flood protection built in but it may not always be effective.

Running TrillTOC as a service;see: http://vbwire.com/advanced/howto/service.asp. That will explain the basics, the only other thing is when you create the registry keys, you need to add an AppParameters key set to 6667. (If a port is passed via command line that "reminder" popup dosn't appear). That will make sure it starts up silently.

Why did I write this?

Simple. I wanted to be able to continue using Trillian and and still be able to talk to family and friends. =) And for the fun of writing my first IM interface from scratch.

* - Support may be added in later.

** - Trill-TOC to Trill-TOC client file transfers and DCC/EDCC chats should work if they normally work under a normal IRC session. (DCC handshake data makes it across)
